Research of Bioplastic

1862

Alexander Parkes (1813-1890) created the first ever man made plastic. He dissolved cellulose nitrate into alcohol and camphor that included ether. This substance was easily molded and was eventually made to be prone from cracking and burning. He named this compound Parkesine and presented it to the public at the London International Exhibition.

1870

John Wesley Hyatt (1837-1920) was an American inventor that was know for creating and simplifying celluloid, an artificial plastic. He developed this new material with his brother Isaiah. They created a business called Celluloid Manufacturing company that produced celluloid in sheets, rods and a variety of shapes. This plastic film was also used for film.

1924

Henry Ford (1863-1947) incorporated soybean into the automobile parts. This was a strong and inexpensive material that ford and chemist created in laboratories.

1926

Maurice Lemoigne (1883-1976) discovered the first bioplastic, polyhydroxybutyrate(PHB).This discovery was ignored for many decades but soon brought interest as findings for alternative petroleum- based products grew. A pilot production of 2 tonnes of PHB was made is 1991.

1941

Henry Ford (1863-1947) revealed the first bioplastic car. It contained more than 14 different types of plastic.A second model was in progress but WWII broke loose and the attention now went to the recovery after the war and the project was abandoned.

In the UK a company called Imperial Chemical Industries developed a bioplastic that was biodegradable. With microbial fermentation, the PHB polymers were created. It was used in Shampoo bottles and with other high-end products.

1990

1950's

Wallace H. Carothers (1896 - 1937)  was an inventor and leader at DuPont for organic chemistry. He was the creator of nylon. This was a light weight synthetic polymer with a chemical structure similar to protein. It was used in fabrics and in other war materials during WWII.

2010

Rémy Lucas and David Coti founded and managed the Algopack. This was a new form of bio-based plastics constructed from the algae and seaweed. It was made to produce and become more active in the manufacturing of  office products.

Elif Bilgin,16, won the Google Science Fair after creating a new formof bioplastic from banana peels. This new invention was made to replace petroleum based plastic and provide a more eco-friendly alternative.

2013

2014

Researchers at Harvard's Wyss Institute created a new form of Bioplastic using shrimp shells. The shells contain the main ingredient to form this bioplastic, chitosan. They hope to use this product in films, wound healing, tissue engineering and much more.
